How do I find my national provider identifier?
What is the National Provider Identifier?
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is used to identify a health care provider in standard transactions including health insurance claims.
NPIs may also be used to identify health care providers on prescriptions, in internal files to connect patented provider identification numbers and other data, in benefit coordination between health plans, in patient medical record systems, in program integrity files, and a variety of other ways.
In standard transactions, HIPAA requires covered organizations to use NPIs. If you make any electronic transactions with federal health programs, you are a covered entity.
When you change practices or work in multiple areas, the NPI remains the same. You can only have one exclusive NPI and search your number using our NPI lookup tool. It can be used by all eligible health plans, obviating the need for the multiple provider numbers already allocated by Medicare, Medicaid, and private payers.
How do I get an NPI?
The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) issues NPIs. You can apply in three ways:-
- By going online to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.
- Through submitting a paper application to the entity that will be assigning the NPI. On https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov, a copy of the application, including the Enumerator’s mailing address, is accessible. You may also request a copy from the Enumerator, Fox Systems. The toll-free number is 1-800-465-3203, and the TTY number is 1-800-692-2326.
- You can send an application in an electronic file via a third-party organization to whom you have given your permission. This could mean that a professional organization or your employer could request an electronic file containing your details as well as the information of other health care providers.
